Construction contract awarded for new hotel in Gainsborough
22 August 2017
The first phase of work to transform the former Sun Inn into a brand new hotel for Gainsborough is underway with the site now being cleared ready for building work to start in the Autumn.
Dransfield Properties and West Lindsey District Council are working in partnership to transform the Market Street, Market Place, Church Street and North Street area of the town – a new 56 room Travelodge hotel is a key ingredient of the new plans.
The development will bring forward the physical and economic regeneration of this part of the town centre - creating 72 new jobs.
The former Sun Inn has now been demolished ready for building work to start – the development team are now reviewing the adjoining properties and their foundations and undertaking ground testing before the main construction work gets underway in October.
The next phase of work on this key town centre site will deliver the new hotel and a Ponti’s Italian Kitchen restaurant on the ground floor including an attractive alfresco dining area and water feature inspired by Paley Park in New York.
The wider regeneration scheme also includes:
• A joint venture partnership to refurbish town centre shops with new traditional shop fronts - creating an Independent Quarter in the town.
• Improvements to the Roseway Car Park creating 30 additional town centre car parking spaces and an attractive and welcoming arrival point for visitors on this key gateway site.
The building work will take just under 12 months to complete and a ground breaking ceremony is due to take place in October when the main contractors move on to site after the demolition, clearance and ground testing work is completed. PDR Construction have been awarded the contract to complete the building work.
The hotel and restaurant will be housed in a stunning Edwardian style building with entrances from Market Street and the Roseway Car Park. The development has been designed by Dixon Dawson Architects – designed by the award winning architects behind Marshalls Yard.
Mark Dransfield, Managing Director for Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “It is fantastic to see the first phase of this important town centre investment get underway.
“We know from the positive feedback we have received in the town about the plans that there is a real need in Gainsborough for a new hotel and it’s great to be a step closer to realising that aspiration.”
