Starbucks now open at East Ham’s newest shopping centre
2 October 2023
The popular coffee chain, Starbucks, is the first business to open in East Ham’s newest retail and leisure destination, The Market Place.
The national coffee chain, operated by a UK based franchisee, opened their 1,400 sq ft unit on the main entrance off Myrtle Road on Saturday.
Benefiting from an attractive water feature and busy footfall from High Street North, the coffee shop has seating for plenty of customers as well as a takeaway and delivery service.
Starbucks is the first of 15 businesses to take up space within the development, which has already delivered 277 new homes in the area in a residential development by Barratt Homes.
Jonathan Cole, Senior Operations Manager from Starbucks said: “We are really looking forward to making new friends either by foot, by train, by mobile ordering or by deliveries and becoming a part of the local East Ham community.
“This is the 26th store operated by Arabica Coffee UK, which has been in partnership with the Starbucks brand since 2016 and operates across Central London.
“To reduce food waste, the new store offers Too Good To Go - a leading surplus food app connecting customers to restaurants and stores that have unsold food.”
The development is a joint venture between Barratt Homes, Land Management and the award-winning Yorkshire based development team from Dransfield Properties. The team have created the stunning range of retail, restaurants, and café spaces all within an enclosed mall paying attention to the industrial heritage of the site reflected by the Crittall style windows and other design features throughout.
The site was previously home to the East Ham Market Hall, part of east London’s rich retail history which was operated for 90 years after being set up to provide business and employment opportunities for World War One veterans.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, James Shepherd, said: “We have been working hard on this project with our partners for almost ten years. It is great therefore to welcome our first tenant and see our investment in East Ham coming to fruition delivering new jobs and opportunities in the area.”
The Market Place units range from 438 sq. ft (40.8sq m) to 2,533 sq. ft (235.34sq m) and the 21,500 sq. ft development is being marketed by London’s CF Commercial.
William Sunnucks Chairman of Land Management Ltd, said: “The old Market Hall was built by my grandfather and served the East Ham Community well for nearly 100 years. I look forward to seeing the Market Place once again buzzing with activity and wish Starbucks every success.”
