New Argos store a step nearer to completion

17 April 2007

The new Argos superstore currently under construction at the Three Lakes Retail Park in Selby has reached a key milestone, with the installation of the structural steelwork now complete.

The 10,500 sq ft store, which is due to be completed by June will allow Argos to operate an ‘Argos Extra’ store with a bigger range of products.  The company’s existing store in the town’s Market Cross Shopping Centre is not able to stock a full product range as it is one of the smallest in the company’s property portfolio.

Argos will open their store in the Autumn after the internal fit out works have been completed.  Staff at Market Cross will transfer to the new store, and their former premises will then undergo a full refurbishment programme which will see the premises split into two separate units.  One unit will become home to a customer service centre for Selby District Council, with the second providing accommodation for a national retailer – details will be announced in the future.

Phase one of the Three Lakes Retail Park opened in 2004 providing accommodation for Aldi, Homebase, Au Naturale, Brantano, Carpetright, McDonalds and Choices Video.  Phase two got underway with a JJB Health and Fitness Club which opened in July last year, and when the Argos store is built, the retail park will be complete.

Work will start next month on an improvement programme for Three Lakes which will deliver benefits for shoppers who do not travel by car.   Developers Dransfield Properties will provide bus shelters at nearby bus stops, upgrade the footpath between the bus stop and the retail park and provide covered cycle racks adjacent to the new Argos store.

In accordance with Dransfield Properties’ policy of employing local labour, York-based contractors Rok are carrying out the construction on the £3.2 million development.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of developers Dransfield Properties, said: “Argos will be fantastic addition to the Three Lakes Retail Park, helping to draw in shoppers from a much wider area.  The new customer service centre for Selby District Council will ensure footfall at Market Cross remains high, so it’s good news all round for traders at both Three Lakes and at Market Cross.”
