New sculpture arrives in Tunstall

12 January 2009

A brand new piece of art created by the internationally renowned sculptor Robert Erskine has arrived in Tunstall this week.

Called The Shard the sculpture is 30 ft high and 30 ft wide and has been created for the new retail development Alexandra Park, off Scotia Road in Tunstall. It depicts an ancient fingerprint on a fragment of pottery and has been produced in wrought stainless steel – designed to stand the test of time.

Weighing 7 tonnes The Shard was transported with a police escort from Midas Technologies in Peterborough to its new home at Alexandra Park in Tunstall. The work of art has been funded by the developer’s Dransfield Properties as part of the company’s ongoing investment in Tunstall which to date totals £24 million with a further £12 million of investment in the next phase of the project.

To mark The Shard’s installation at Alexandra Park a special ceremony is due to take place at 11:30am on Monday January 19th when the pupils from nearby Mill Hill Primary School will also bury a time capsule at the site.

The sculptor Robert Erskine said: “It is very exciting to see The Shard in position at Alexandra Park. This has been in the planning stage for more than three years and I have been working on the sculpture itself since July so it is wonderful to be at this stage and seeing the piece in the place it was designed for.”

Andrew Malley Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties said: “We are all extremely impressed with The Shard and delighted to have worked with Robert on the project, this piece of art is an important part of the wider improvements and development works to this part of Tunstall and we hope it will be enjoyed by residents and visitors to the area for many years.”
