Plans for a new hotel in Gainsborough are given the green light to go ahead

28 October 2014

Ambitious plans for an attractive new hotel on a key site in Gainsborough have taken a major step forward this week.

West Lindsey District Council's Planning Committee unanimously approved the £3 million development in August this year but the decision was referred to the Department for Communities and Local Government for final approval.

The DCLG has now confirmed that the decision can be determined locally – effectively upholding the councillors’ unanimous approval and giving the go-ahead for the plans.

The new scheme will transform the former Sun Inn site on the corner of Market Street and North Street in Gainsborough and work could start on site early in 2015.

Developers Dransfield Properties, who also delivered the award winning Marshall’s Yard, are bringing forward the new town centre development. They’ve worked with the architects Dixon Dawson to design a stunning Edwardian style hotel housing 51 bedrooms which is in keeping with the neighbouring buildings.

When members of WLDC's Planning Committee unanimously approved the scheme they praised the high quality of design. But as a small part of the former Sun Inn is a Grade II listed building their decision had to be referred to Government Office.

The plans have been widely supported by the business community in Gainsborough, representatives of a number of local firms, including Ping spoke in favour of the new development at the planning meeting to stress the importance to the local economy of a good quality hotel.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, welcome the news from the DCLG.
He said: “We were delighted to have the unanimous approval of councillors for our hotel development as well as the huge amount of support it has received from the business community in Gainsborough.

"There’s been a long held aspiration for a hotel in a central location in the town which will benefit both tourism and local business and this is a great step forward in realising that aspiration.

"We have always maintained from the outset that this is an important decision for the town which should be determined locally and we’re delighted that DCLG agree with that position.”

The same design team which worked on the town’s award winning Marshall’s Yard development, also brought forward by Dransfield Properties Ltd, has worked on the plans for the new hotel. The building has been designed to a traditional Edwardian design with a natural stone plinth and arched windows.
