Samuel Fox name lives on in new multi million development for Stocksbridge

Stocksbridge High School pupil Katie Holmes picked a winner when she came up with the name for the new retail and office development due to get started in her town next year.

Youngsters from schools across Stocksbridge were challenged by developers Dransfield Properties Ltd to delve into the history books to suggest names for the scheme which will transform a 15 acre former steelworks site off Manchester Road.

The development will be called Fox Valley and a logo featuring a fox has also been created – reflecting the industrial heritage of the site which was once part of the vast Samuel Fox steel works.

Katie, who was a pupil at Stocksbridge Junior School when she entered the competition, was presented with a certificate and gift vouchers by the mayor of Stocksbridge, Cllr Susie Abrahams, at the Town Council meeting on Thursday November 8^th.

Katie said she was surprised and delighted that her name was chosen for the new development and gave the striking green and orange logo her seal of approval!   

Cllr Abrahams said: “I’m very impressed with the talent shown by our young people in Stocksbridge in coming up with some great ideas. I’d like to congratulate Katie on suggesting Fox Valley.

“I’m sure she’ll be looking forward to seeing the signs with the name Fox Valley, going up once the development is completed.”

The £46 million scheme will bring a new foodstore, offices, restaurants and other new retail outlets to Stocksbridge as well as a town centre car park, a landscaped garden area and riverside walkways.

The phased development also include a new Test House and warehouse for the neighouring Tata Steel steelworks and a new housing development is also being delivered.

Amanda Holmes, Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, said: “We had some great suggestions but we really are delighted with the name Fox Valley suggested by Katie.

“Although this site is undergoing a major transformation we wanted to reflect its history and one of the ways we can do that is in the name, we’ve also looked carefully at the architecture and the public realm.”

Katie will be invited to take part in the ground breaking ceremony when work gets started on site in 2013.
