What’s in a name? Youngsters delve into the history books for Waverley’s new town centre development

Youngsters from primary schools across the Rotherham region are being challenged to put their thinking caps on in a bid to find a name for a brand-new retail and leisure development being built on their doorstep.
The new development, brought forward by Waverley Square Limited, a joint venture between Harworth Group plc and Dransfield Properties Ltd, is a key part in the ongoing regeneration of the 740-acre Waverley site close to Junction 33 of the M1.
Now the company has approached local primary schools in their search for a name for the exciting new development which is part of Yorkshire’s largest ever brownfield site development.
Once completed, the plans will deliver a new £50million retail, leisure and office scheme for Waverley in Rotherham, delivering over 190,000 sq. ft. of mixed-use space and creating over 700 new jobs.
Development is expected to take around eighteen months to reach full build out, with construction work due to begin later in the year.
Communications Director, Amanda Holmes said: “We are looking for a name which will provide a clear identity and reflect the optimism and history of the area. We have received some very imaginative entries so far and we are very excited to be involved in such a creative project to find a name that will put this exciting new development on the map.
“Whilst we are striving to work closely with the local schools, we are keen to ensure that all the local children have the opportunity to enter. Further details of how you can enter can be found on our website or pop along and pick up an entry form from Playmania at Orgreave Road, Sheffield”.
The youngsters will be looking into the history and heritage of their area to come up with a list of suggested names for the development.
The chosen name for the development will be announced later in the spring with a prize awarded to the winning entrant.
The centre will link the internationally renowned Advanced Manufacturing Park, home to major employers including Boeing and Sheffield University and Waverley’s growing residential community, where 700 homes have been built and occupied over the past four years.
Dransfield Properties Ltd and Harworth Group Plc announced the joint venture agreement to deliver the development last year.
They have worked with South Yorkshire architects Dixon Dawson on a stunning design which will bring new community facilities as well as restaurants and retail space to this thriving area.
