Whitefield - New Morrisons Store

WHITEFIELD'S NEW MORRISONS STORE A STEP CLOSER!

WHITEFIELD'S NEW MORRISONS STORE A STEP CLOSER!

15 November 2004

Plans have been approved to build three new bungalows in Whitefield, Bury – as part of Dransfield Properties’ major district centre regeneration scheme.

Bury Metro Council approved the plans for the new homes for elderly residents at a Planning Control Committee meeting on Tuesday November 9th.

The three new bungalows will be built on land at Mather Avenue in Whitefield and once completed they will provide new homes for some of the elderly residents who’s properties on Elms Road fall into the development site of the new Morrisons store.

The plans for the new 80,000 sq ft store on the former Brand Centre site were approved last month – both schemes have now been referred to Government office.

Government office have indicated this week that they need more time to determine the Morrisons scheme. If the plans are given final approval work could start on the supermarket in Summer 2005 with the store expected to be completed 12 months later.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “We are delighted that the plans for the new bungalows have been approved by Bury Metro.

“After lengthy consultation with the three households it was decided that building the new bungalows would be a much better option for them and provide more suitable accommodation.

“In all three cases they are elderly residents and it was felt that this would be an ideal opportunity to replace their present houses with new bungalows which they are all looking forward to moving into.

“This decision by Bury Metro will of course give peace of mind to those residents who are moving. Ensuring everything runs smoothly for the householders we are relocating will be a priority.”

The £20 million investment in Whitefield will bring around 350 new jobs to the area and regenerate the run down Brand Centre site creating a landmark building.

As well as a brand new Morrisons store of 80,000 sq ft the new development also includes the relocation of Café Roma – from the existing building on Bury New Road to a new purpose built restaurant adjoining the new store, on the corner of Elms Street and Bury New Road.

The plans also include an area of lower ground floor parking with 475 car parking spaces overall.
