Work starts on Selby JJB

Construction starts on JJB fitness centre at Three Lakes, Selby
31 August 2005
Selby MP John Grogan performed a soil cutting ceremony on Friday, September 2 to mark the start of construction on phase two of the Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road.
Contractors have cleared the former Pro-Am Karting site to make way for a JJB Health and Fitness Centre. The 45,000 square foot unit will be on two floors and include a 20 metre pool, fully equipped gym, dance studios and a first floor JJB store. The health and fitness mixed-use format has proved a winning formula in other towns – the clever use of floor space allows membership fees to be flexible and at a lower rate than traditional health clubs.
Phase one of Three Lakes opened in March 2004 and was fully pre let before the scheme was completed. The development houses Homebase (25,000 sq ft plus 10,000 sq ft garden centre), McDonalds (2,350 sq ft) Pets at Home (3,500sq ft), Halfords (6,135 sq ft), Carpetright (5,000 sq ft), Au Naturale (8,200 sq ft), Choices Video (3,500sq ft), Aldi (12,924 sq ft) and Brantano (5,000 sq ft). All retailers have reported better than expected trade since phase one opened.
Designed by Chesterfield based architects WCEC, the unit will take in views of the nearby canal. An extra 116 parking spaces will be created and amalgamated into the existing phase one car park.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “The Three Lakes Retail Park was one of the first market town parks we worked on, and being able to deliver phase two of the scheme is a sign of the park’s success. JJB will be a fantastic addition to the park, expanding the retail mix and providing additional leisure facilities.”
The £4.6 million development for the fitness centre is being delivered by construction company Allenbuild, with completion scheduled for April 2006.
