Bien Fait (or well done!) to the Dransfield Charity Cyclists!

10 June 2008

A team of cyclists from South and East Yorkshire have braved peaks the size of Snowdonia and covered an amazing 335 miles to travel from Paris to Lyon as part of a major fundraising push.

The saddle sore cyclists from Dransfield Properties in Barnsley and PDR in Hull are working their way across Europe to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and Leukemia Research.

And on this latest leg between Paris and Lyon they’re on target to have raised around £25,000.

Despite rain, aching limbs and saddle sores the 12 Yorkshire riders managed to complete the gruelling French course in just four days traveling an average of 80 miles a day. They’re now back in Yorkshire – already planning their route for next year’s challenge.

Property developer Mark Dransfield, of Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd, joined his brother’s Hull based company PDR Construction to field the fundraising team.

Last year the team cycled from London to Paris and they are planning to complete a leg every year until they have traveled across Europe.

As well as Mark Dransfield and Andrew Malley the Sheffield team also included Independent Financial Advisor, David Simpson, Peter Crossland of Irwin Mitchell and David Vernon Edwards of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

Mark is Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, the urban regeneration specialists based in Barnsley.

He said: “Last year was a tough challenge but that was nothing compared to this time, the distance was much longer and it was extremely steep, we all knew it was going to be tougher going but I don’t think any of us realised just how tough.

“The weather was against us for three days and we battled through the rain – although it was beautiful sunshine in the UK it was throwing it down in France! But we did it and we’re all pleased to have finished the course.

“Next year we want to go from Lyon to Marseille  and the plan is that we continue our journey, cycling 250 miles every year.  We are grateful to everyone who has sponsored us so far but it’s not too late if anyone else would like to donate money to the two causes we are supporting.”
