Charity cyclists saddle up for epic ride from Berlin to Copenhagen
9 September 2016
A team of charity cyclists from the South Yorkshire based firm Dransfield Properties Ltd are gearing up for a tough challenge next week - cycling from the German capital of Berlin to Copenhagen in Denmark.
The team of 13 riders are taking part in the tenth leg of an annual charity ride and will be covering 400 over five days cycling across northern Germany and into Denmark in their efforts to raise £50,000 for charity. Since starting their challenge in 2007 they’ve covered more than 3,000 miles.
The team, nicknamed the MAMILS will start their challenge on Monday September 12th in Berlin where last year’s ride finished. The annual ride was founded by brothers Mark and Paul Dransfield - their company's PDR Construction and Dransfield Properties field a team of riders every year.
Since starting their challenge in 2007 they’ve covered more than 3,000 miles. This year they'll cover a long and gruelling route over five days with the aim of arriving in the Danish capital on Friday September 16th.
The team will be joined by the pro-cyclist and World Championship Silver Medallist, Tony Gibb who also heads up the new Full Gas Bike store at Fox Valley in north Sheffield - the centre is owned and managed by Dransfield Properties and was opened in June this year by Joanna Lumley OBE.
The Full Gas team car will be on hand throughout the challenge to support the riders as they head across northern Germany and into Denmark.
The South Yorkshire riders will be joined by team members from Lincolnshire, Hull, Merseyside and London.
The MAMILS have completed a leg of the Tour of Europe since the ride was founded in 2007. That year they cycled from London to Paris starting at Tower Bridge – they’re aiming to be back at the same point by 2020.
Over the last nine years the team has covered more than 3,000 miles and raised around £380,000 for charity. When they complete their challenge in 2020 they’re hoping to have raised a total of £500,000 through their marathon fundraising efforts which by then will have spanned 13 years.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “We are really looking forward getting started on this year's challenge on Monday. Over the years we have had the Alps and the Apennine Mountains to contend with and we don't expect the route from Berlin to Copenhagen to be any less forgiving this year.
"We are all looking forward to getting started and are very much focussed on raising as much money as possible for the charities we are supporting.”
The team have once again chosen to support Action Against Cancer, Bloodwise and The Dransfield Foundation – a Trust established to help support local causes and community projects and initiatives.
The team is also supporting CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) after a colleague of the PDR team riders lost his teenage son to a rare and undetected heart condition.
