Tunstall’s new health and fitness centre – completed earlier this year by Dransfield Properties Ltd – will be the country’s first new centre to be fitted out under the new DW Sports & Fitness brand.

DW Sports & Fitness have bought 53 Fitness Clubs with retail stores from JJB Sports in an £83.4 million deal.

The deal includes JJB health and fitness centres and retail stores at Dransfield owned developments including the Three Lakes Retail Park in Selby and the award winning Marshall’s Yard development in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire which opened two years ago.

And DW Sports & Fitness have announced that the recently completed development at Alexandra Park in Tunstall, Stoke on Trent will be the first new building to be fitted out under their brand.

The Tunstall centre covers 45,000 sq ft over two floors and has been built as part of the Dransfield Properties Alexandra Park development.

It has been designed to have a gym on the lower ground floor with a sports store at car park level. The team at DW are now looking at their fit out plans and how best to utilise the space with the range of services they want to offer at the impressive £8 million development which is built on the former Alexandra Potteries site.

With a three month fit out period the new centre will open later this year, a projected opening date is expected in the next few weeks. The air conditioned gym will be equipped with cutting edge fitness equipment, as well as a beautifully lit swimming pool, relaxing spas and spacious group exercise areas.

Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties, Andrew Malley, said: “We are very pleased to be announcing that our scheme at Tunstall will house the first newly fitted out DW Sports and Fitness centre. The fact that the company has acquired the lease shows continued confidence in the town centre and we look forward to the gym opening later this year.”

DW Sports & Fitness said they were looking forward to welcoming their first members in Stoke on Trent – the company will be recruiting 40 members of staff to work at the new health and fitness centre once it opens.

Alexandra Park recently attracted wide publicity when the piece of art by award winning sculptor Robert Erskine known as The Shard was put in place earlier this year as a centrepiece to the development. A second phase of the scheme is also planned which will deliver a new state of the art health centre for the Stoke on Trent Primary Care Trust  as well as further further retail space.
