Edward Leigh MP unveils triumphal arches at Marshall’s Yard, Gainsborough

Gainsborough MP Edward Leigh has unveiled the triumphal arches which will provide the Marshall’s Yard shopping and leisure complex in Gainsborough with a dramatic pedestrian entrance.

The arches sit on the Beaumont Street side of the site and represent a key milestone in construction.  With just two weeks to go until Marshall’s Yard officially opens on 6 April, the installation of the arches demonstrates to passers by that the long awaited transformation of this former engineering works is just around the corner.

Triumphal arches consist of two pillars connected by an arch, crowned with a structure which bears a commemorative inscription.  Not surprisingly, the inscription on the arches will read Marshall’s Yard, but in a bizarre twist of fate, the foreman in charge of their installation is called John Marshall!

The arches stand at over 10 metres tall, and weigh in excess of 23 tonnes.  They were built off site at stone masonry specialists James and Taylor, and installed on site by main contractors Tolent.   

Mark Dransfield, Director of Marshall’s Yard Ltd said: “We are very close to the opening day now, and I would like to pay tribute to the Site Manager, Mick Ashton, and everybody who is working on site, who are pulling out all the stops to ensure we make the Easter opening.  As with most developments of this scale, there have been many unforeseen challenges along the way, but with work now taking place seven days a week, construction is back on programme and Gainsborough will soon be enjoying a new era in modern retailing.”
