Plans deferred for new Slaithwaite ALDI store

23 October 2013

Plans for a new ALDI store on a former mill site in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield, have been deferred by members of Kirklees Council’s planning committee.

Planning officers had recommended the development be approved –  delivering a new 12,100 sq ft  sales area store designed in natural stone and corten steel.

Members of Kirklees Council’s planning committee discussed the proposals on Thursday October 17th and voted to defer the application outlining that they needed further information.

Councillors have asked for further clarification on design, car park management and HGV manoeuvres.

As well as a new store with good links to the other shops and facilities in Slaithwaite the proposals, being brought forward by Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd, will also deliver a new 90 space car park as well as highway improvements.

Head of communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: “We have listened to the aspects of the scheme the members of the planning committee have asked clarification on. Our professional team is now working on those issues with the local authority and we look forward to our application being back before the planning committee at the earliest opportunity.”

If the plans are approved the development off Britannia Road in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield, will transform a rundown former mill site, currently owned by the local firm Spectrum Yarns and help to retain trade in the area.

As well as delivering a new town centre foodstore and car park to serve the local catchment the new Aldi store will also create and secure jobs in the area.

A number of businesses in the area have submitted petitions to Kirklees Council in support of the new store  - more than 700 people have signed the petition organised by several businesses in Slaithwaite all keen to see the new development plans come to fruition.

Local residents and businesses have also submitted more than 200 letters of support for the development plans.
