Revised Stocksbridge plans on show this weekend

26 November 2007

Revised plans for the £46 million redevelopment of Stocksbridge will be on show this Saturday, 1 December 2007 from 9.00 am until 12 noon at Stocksbridge Library on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge.

Local residents, businesses and community groups are invited to attend the event, where they will be able to see site layouts and artist impressions of the proposed regeneration scheme.  Members of the development team will be in attendance to explain the proposals in detail and answer any questions which arise.

An earlier public exhibition held in July found widespread support from the local community and feedback from this event and other stakeholder meetings has been incorporated.  A major change has been the removal of 400 new homes from the plans as residents were worried that the current Stocksbridge infrastructure is insufficient for additional housing.  Developers Dransfield Properties and Gallaghers UK have now withdrawn the housing until the retail element is complete and the Stocksbridge infrastructure is strengthened.

A planning application will be submitted before the end of this year to deliver:

·        a 55,000 sq ft foodstore

·        57,000 sq ft of additional retail space

·        a 2,500 sq ft coffee shop

·        44,000 sq ft of offices and community health care facilities

·        an oriental water feature at the entrance to the development.

The scheme has been made possible following Outukumpu's decision to relocate its annealing plant to the company's facilities at Meadowhall.  Any other businesses which need to be relocated to make way for the development will be offered alternative accommodation in the town.

Jackie Helliwell of Dransfield Properties added: “We are now very close to submitting a planning an application and this weekend’s event provides a further opportunity for members of the local community to have some input into our proposals.”
