Work Moves Forward on Tunstall’s New Primary Care Centre

20 January 2011

A multi-million pound milestone will be reached in Tunstall next week.

A special ceremony is being held on Friday January 28th to mark the steelwork being erected on the site of the new £4.5 million Tunstall Primary Care Centre.

Work is due to be completed on the centre in late summer. The occasion is being held to mark the second phase of Tunstall’s successful Alexandra Park development – which will bring a further £7 million investment and secure jobs in the town.

NHS Stoke on Trent Chief Executive Graham Urwin and Stoke on Trent North MP Joan Walley will both be attending the event .

Miller Construction started work on this latest phase of the scheme in November 2010. As well as a brand new Primary Care Centre covering 22,174 sq ft over two floors it will also deliver a new 5,000 sq ft pharmacy. A further phase will create more retail space in the town.

The new facility will provide accommodation for;

·         GP practices – Dr Bose and Dr Sonnathi.

·         Dental Access Centre.

·         District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing, and Specialist Nursing.

·         Paediatric Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, and Podiatry.

·         Dietetics, Continence Services, and Orthoptics.

·         Blood testing.

NHS Stoke on Trent Chief Executive Graham Urwin said: “We’re delighted that work is progressing on the centre which is due to open in September 2011. Once it’s finished it will provide a modern health care facility which will fully support the delivery of high quality easily accessible services.”

The first phase of the Alexandra Park development was completed two years ago and houses various retail outlets and a gym.

Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties, Andrew Malley, said:  “We have worked in Tunstall now for nearly ten years, delivering the Matalan store and later the Jasper Square development and the first phase of Alexandra Park.”

He added: “We are delighted therefore to be bringing forward this next phase of the Alexandra Park development which will bring a wide range of heath care facilities and services together on one site in the heart of the town.”

Shaun Kearney, Operations Manager, Miller Construction, said: “I am confident that once completed, the centre will bring many benefits to the local community for many years to come.  Miller Construction has a successful track record in the delivery of PCT facilities across the UK and we look forward to delivering the finished building later this year.”

There will also be parking facilities for 241 spaces, as well as landscaped grounds and a courtyard garden for patients and visitors with pedestrian and cycle access to the City’s Greenway Network.
